Statement
We as a society have become ever more impatient for the latest upgrade due to the ever-increasing speed and advancement of our circadian lives. We expect the cycle of each new product to outpace its predecessor. Media, products, and services have to continuously evolve whether the advancements are warranted or necessary. Oversaturation of the market with consumer based excess has become a distraction at best.
This distraction is in concert with the continued mass exportation of US manufacturing. Both actions have permanently redefined our country from the loss of manufacturing jobs in our communities over the last twenty plus years while numbing our senses through consumption and media distractions.
My work is motivated by observing these trends and how these movements affect our society. My goal is to inform the viewer of these mechanisms and processes that affect our lives that are typically overlooked or disregarded.
These observational themes in my work are meant to be interacted with and examined (possibly challenged) through imagery, video and bygone devices.
The visual and physical manifestations of my work can encompass many forms as each exploration incorporates a certain technology and/or material object. This may be in the form of an interactive experience through a found object or a time-based composition. I see the pedestal as a relevant vehicle, but not the only means to engage the viewer. Breaking the boundary of the typical gallery setting to include interaction or social reflection is core to my work.
Drawing inspiration from history, experiences, and curiosity of my surroundings, I find the domestic environment engaging and instrumental to my research. My intention is that a familiar topic and/or object may be an entry point for the viewer, while transcending the original function of the object’s original use.
The amalgamation of both social commentary and multifaceted experiences for the viewer is designed to create a contemplative experience while avoiding estrangement. From the tactile quality of a physical object, to the curiosity of familiar themes, my hope is for deeper consideration of topics put forth.
